Are ACL Injuries More Common in Women?
Are ACL injuries more common in women? Believe it or not, the answer is yes. Women put greater stress on their knees as a result of differences in biomechanics when compared to men. Within the restricted space of the female knee, the two rounded ends of the thigh bone (femoral condyles) can more easily pinch the ACL leading to its rupture (or tear).
Here’s a few more interesting facts regarding ACL injuries in women:
- An ACL injury can sideline athletes for 9-12 months
- The ACL is responsible for 90% of knee stability
- Women athletes are 2-8x more likely to injury their knee compared to males
